In 1609 Henry Hudson sailed into the New York City Narrows—the passage of waterways separating the cities of Staten Island, Brooklyn and New York City—and officially named Staten Island as Staaten Eylandt. In 1664 the British took control of the city and it was renamed to its more commonly known spelling.
Staten Island's location was pivotal in George Washington's ability to survey British forces during the Revolutionary War.
In 1898 Staten Island officially became part of New York City and its third largest borough, in terms of land mass. Today, beyond its geographical position and historical relevance to New York City, Staten Island is known for its development of green spaces, considering that it has cultivated an astounding 170 public parks.
The borough is also known for its many museums, which includes the Staten Island Children's Museum, the National Lighthouse Museum, the Jacques Marchais Museum of Tibetan Art, and the Museum of Maritime Navigation.
Perhaps the most famous Staten Island attraction, however, is the Staten Island Ferry, which transports approximately 25 million passengers per year. The Staten Island Ferry was established in 1810 by Cornelius Vanderbilt, a Staten Island native, who was then only 16-years-old.
Other notable figures from Staten Island include, rocker David Johansen, folk singer Joan Baez, pop singer Christina Aguilera and hip hop artists Wu-Tang Clan, to name just a few.
This Staten Island unisex t-shirt will be a cool favorite. It is soft, comfortable and offers a perfect fit for all.
