New York City Home of Legends - Times Square T-Shirt
New York City Home of Legends - Times Square T-Shirt:
In 1904 New York’s Time Square was officially introduced to midtown Manhattan and into the consciousness of New Yorkers, when the region, formally known as Long Acre Square, was summarily changed in honor of the recently established New York Times building.
Over the ensuing years, this iconic region quickly became intrinsic to the lifeblood of New York City and to the scores of people who visit it.
In 1928 the “Times Square Tower” installed an electric ticker sign bulletin board, known as “The Zipper”, in order to display important news headlines to the public—all within a minute of breaking news.
The letters of The Zipper extended around the Times Square Tower and could be seen for several city blocks, as it alerted the public to some of the most important headlines of the past, such as the passing of FDR, the end of World War 2, and the moon landing.
Beyond the excitement of capturing the zeitgeist of the nation and the world, however, Times Square would become important throughout the decades for being the gathering place at the end of each year, where New Year's Eve revelers assemble to ring in the New Year.
