Soon there appeared a host of brilliant wordsmiths, otherwise known as rappers, from all four boroughs of New York City, as well as other states across the nation, pioneering artists such as the Sugarhill Gang, Curtis Blow, Afrika Bambaataa and Grand Master Flash and the Furious Five, whose socially conscious record "The Message" signaled the potential relevance of hip hop as a cultural force. 

Over the past few decades, the genre has showcased scores of chart-topping artists and has attracted tremendous favorability beyond the borders of the United States, where international response has ensconced it among the top of the world's most prominent forms of popular music.
